Hopkins’ Legislative Action Coalition to host candidate forum

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Hopkins Public Schools’ Legislative Action Coalition, in partnership with the Special Education Advisory Committee, is hosting a Legislative Candidate Education Forum.

September 09, 2016

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Hopkins Public Schools’ Legislative Action Coalition, in partnership with the Special Education Advisory Committee, is hosting a Legislative Candidate Education Forum. The Forum will be held at the Eisenhower Community Center (1001 Highway 7, Hopkins) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Twenty-four Minnesota House of Representatives and State Senator candidates from the seven voting districts within the Hopkins Public Schools boundaries are invited to present their views on education and issues that affect students. Two of these races (district 44 and 48) have been named to Minnpost’s “25 Legislative Races to Watch” list. The forum will provide the public an opportunity to ask questions and listen to the educational priorities of the candidates who are seeking election.

The evening will begin with a short welcome and introductions, followed by break-out sessions divided by legislative district. There will be volunteers to direct guests and attendees to their proper rooms, and also to help community members determine what district they live in. The Legislative Action Coalitions will ask each candidate several education-related questions, and members of the public will also be encouraged to submit questions.

Those who attend will have an opportunity to meet the person behind the lawn sign and learn about our candidates’ approaches to the challenges facing public education that have a direct impact on our students. State government has an even more profound effect on our students’ education than does the federal government, since the state provides many of the policy directives and most of the funding for our Minnesota schools.

Questions can be directed to Legislative Action Coalition Liaison Catherine Callahan at 952.988.4089 or Catherine.callahan@hopkinsschools.org.

About the LAC: The purpose of Hopkins Public Schools’ Legislative Action Coalition is to assist the Hopkins School Board in advocacy for education-related legislation. The LAC Steering Committee coordinates these advocacy efforts throughout the Hopkins School District by developing, proposing, and advocating for legislative positions designed to advance the cause of good schools in Hopkins and Minnesota.
